Love Your Knitwear For Longer

Your favourite knitwear should last season after season—wrapped around your shoulders on chilly mornings, layered up for family lunches, or curled up on the couch with a cuppa. Quality knitwear is an investment in everyday comfort, and like anything worth keeping, it deserves a little TLC.

Here’s our easy, no-fuss guide to keeping your knitwear looking and feeling lovely.

1. Wash Gently—Less Is More

Knitwear doesn’t need frequent washing. In fact, a little airing out between wears can go a long way. When it's time for a wash, opt for a gentle cold cycle or better yet, hand wash in cool water using a mild wool-friendly detergent.

Tip: Pop your knit into a laundry bag to avoid snagging if you're using the machine.

2. Dry Flat, Not Hanging

Once washed, gently squeeze out the excess water (never wring it!). Lay your knit flat on a clean towel and reshape it as needed. Let it dry naturally out of direct sunlight.

Avoid hanging—this can stretch your knitwear and make shoulders droop. And no one wants a sad, saggy sleeve.

3. Store It Right

When it’s not chilly enough for woolly layers, fold your knitwear and tuck it away in a cool, dry drawer or shelf. Hanging can cause stretching over time, and overcrowded wardrobes don’t do anyone any favours.

Tip: Pop in a lavender sachet to keep your knits fresh and moth-free.

4. Pilling? Don't Panic

Minor pilling is normal, especially in well-loved knits. They’re caused by fibres rubbing together and don’t mean your knit is poor quality. Simply use a fabric comb or lint shaver to gently remove them.

5. Treat Stains Sooner Than Later

If life happens (spills and smudges love light colours), dab the stain gently with cold water and a bit of mild detergent. No harsh rubbing—just patience and a soft cloth.

With just a bit of care, your favourite pieces will stay the distance—looking beautiful, feeling soft, and staying in your wardrobe (and heart) for years to come.

At Black Pepper, we design with longevity in mind—so you can wear your knits your way, season after season.
