Meet the face (and name!) behind our beautiful World Kindness Day artwork, Rowan
(@littlerowanredhead). Painter, printer & illustrator, and all round fabulous woman.
What inspired you for your artwork for Black Pepper?
The butterfly was an obvious choice given the times we find ourselves in. It’s been
another tough year, especially for the residents of NSW and Victoria. However, now we
are emerging out of our cocoons and unfurling our wings and marvelling at our little
freedoms, filled with hope and gratitude.
What did you love most about working with Black Pepper?
It is refreshing to see a company that supports and cares for the wellbeing of its
customers. Community, kindness and generosity are principles that guide me in my
day-to-day life and I feel that Black Pepper as a brand embodies these tenets.
What does World Kindness Day/showing acts of kindness mean to you?
We really should have World Kindness Day everyday! A small act of kindness can make
someone’s day. It could be as simple as making someone a cup of tea, giving a friend a
call to tell them you were thinking of them, giving someone a compliment, dropping off
food unannounced to someone who is struggling.
What do you love most about being an artist?
I love working with my hands and being focused in the flow of art marking. For me,
painting and printmaking really helps to still my busy mind by focusing on the task at
hand. For me there is nothing more satisfying that seeing the tiniest thread of an idea
in my mind and being able to tease it out and weave it into a beautiful, tangible object.
What/who inspires you?
I take a lot of inspiration from nature. There really is beauty all around us, even when we
live in urban landscapes. I marvel in this beauty and aim to express this joy on the page.
Even a walk around my suburb seeing the spring growth in my neighbour’s gardens can
inspire me. I also take a lot of inspiration from fellow makers in my community, from the
passion and joy that we share.
