Live Life Actively

We all know that maintaining an active lifestyle is an essential component to
keeping in good shape and experiencing fewer health issues as we age. Today we
invite you to make a commitment to live life actively.

WHY DO I NEED TO KEEP ACTIVE

Physical activity should be an integral part of your daily
routine for the following reasons:

IT KEEPS YOU IN GOOD SHAPE
IT IMPROVES SLEEP
IT GIVES YOU MORE ENERGY
IT REDUCES THE RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
IT BOOSTS MOOD

HOW MUCH EXERCISE SHOULD I BE DOING?

The Australian Department of Health recommends 30 minutes of daily exercise
daily or at least 5 times a week. This regime can help reduce the risk of injuries,
arthritis, heart disease, lung problems, dementia and depression. Furthermore,
increased strength and mobility can help preventing falls and all in all promote a
more independent and fulfilled life.

If you’re just getting back into the swing of regular exercise and can’t do
30 minutes to begin with, don’t worry. Even with a small increase in physical
activity, you can already start building strength and endurance and reap
some health benefits.

Begin with 10 minutes of activity a day. After you feel comfortable with this
amount, you can try doing 2 x 15 minutes of activity at different times of the day.
After a few weeks you will find it much easier to achieve your 30 a day.

WHAT TYPES OF EXERCISE SHOULD I BE DOING?

The best physical activity regime is one that incorporates a mix of moderate
fitness, strength, balance and flexibility into your weekly exercises. It is also good
practice to avoid sitting down for prolonged periods of time, try to keep active
throughout the day.

Moderate fitness ideas:

You could complete one or more of these activities as part of your daily routine:

BRISK WALKING
SWIMMING
CYCLING
GARDENING
DANCING
MOPPING AND VACUUMING

Strength activity ideas:

Strength exercises are good for maintaining strong muscles and healthy bones. Try
to complete specific strength and weight exercises two to three times a week.
Good workout options include the ones outlined in More Life Health’s video:

SQUATS
CHAIR DEADLIFT
BENT OVER ROW
CHAIR PUSH UP
BRIDGE

Flexibility and Balance exercises:

Staying flexible assists with your ability to bend and reach, while good balance will
help to prevent falls. Why not give Tai Chi or Yoga classes a try? Dancing and
bowls are great options, too.

MAKE IT FUN!

The most important thing to remember with living your active life is to make
it fun. The more you enjoy exercising, the easier it will be to get your 30 minutes of
activity a day. If you’re a social person, join a walking group or do classes with your
friends or family so you can catch up on the goss while you exercise. Finding an
activity that you love doing means that you will be more motivated to carry
it through.

MAKE IT FASHION!

As the weather gets chillier it may be a little demotivating to go out and about,
why not inject a dose of good mood with our latest athleisure wear styles whilst
protecting yourself from the first chills?
